Abstract

Dermatological disorders are common in patients infected with HIV (Human Immunodeficiency Virus), being present in all stages of progression. Skin manifestations provide useful clues to diagnose the infection. Moreover, these pathologies may reveal the presence of an associated systemic disease or may suggest the progression of immunosuppression. Dermatological manifestations are more severe in these patients compared to the general population and do not respond to conventional therapies, relapses being frequent. These lesions have an important psychological impact on patients, representing a real stigma, affecting the quality of life. The clinical picture of HIV patients varies significantly, depending upon the geographic region or upon the different groups of risk. In this article I attempted to highlight the most common skin manifestations of HIV-infected patients and to describe their main features, as pointed out in recent scientific papers.
