Abstract

The review of 563 journals publishing new species worldwide and 14,263 references showed 5,745 new species of animals, plants and fungi which represents an average of 2.48 species per paper. In this compilation fossils are not considered, nor any other taxonomic level below the species. The type localities of the newly described species belong to 185 nations, with China, Brazil and Australia as the most recorded (1,829, 1,036 and 966 species, respectively). Even if there are consortia as State of Observed Species (SOS) that collect every year the number of new species around the world, there is not a publication where each country's contribution to global biodiversity is shown, an information that would allow the detection of bias in the biodiversity conservation efforts and the generation of taxonomic knowledge itself.
