Abstract

A large proportion of anti-cancer treatments (chemotherapy and targeted therapies) is delivered in ambulatory setting in day-hospital units, a treatment modality more convenient for patients and less expensive for public health. An optimization of the day-hospital organization is required to reduce the patient's time spent in hospital for both waiting and treatment administration. The new therapy modalities developed since several years (oral chemotherapy/oral targeted therapies) have contributed to modify the patient's care: less aggressive way of administration but need of patient's education in order to improve the compliance and to manage the adverse effects of these therapies. This (re)organization involves physician as well as nurses for in-patient time and/or telephone call. More recently was developed for some targeted therapies a sub-cutaneous form which allows a more rapid administration of treatment and avoid the risk of noncompliance, well known for oral treatments. These new therapeutic approaches have an impact for patients (less invasive treatment administration, better quality of life), for health care professionals (modification of their practice), for institutions (which have to modify hospital organization) and public health (with an objective of costs reduction).
