Botswana, a South African country, is one of the examples that is to change the perceptions of instability and under-development in Africa. While it was among the poorest countries of Africa when it became independent, Botswana underwent a rapid economic growth following the discovery of diamond in 1967. By virtue of the policies aiming at sustainable development, it became one of the fastest growing economies of the world. Furthermore, Botswana was called as "an African success story". Parallel to the economical growth, Botswana managed to be a politically stable country. Botswana is one of the rare African countries that have never experienced a military coup d'état. This article deals with how Botswana managed to develop exceptionally while many African countries were experiencing political instability and economical collapse even though they had as much underground minerals as Botswana had.
