Abstract: The article discusses a speech delivered by U.S. president Barack Obama in which he outlined a strategy of sustained U.S. military involvement in Iraq and Syria aimed at combating the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria (ISIS) extremist organization. Topics addressed include plans to aid rebels in Syria's civil war and order airstrikes against ISIS within Syria, as well as differences between Obama's strategy and prior U.S. military strategies in the Middle East.
