Abstract

The following paper is a study of the deliberative development of the Mexican media, both broadcast and print, through the analysis of their current legal framework, culture, ownership scheme and common practices. It is grounded on archive research, interviews and literature review. Its analytical framework is based on particular concepts of the theory of deliberative democracy developed by contemporary philosophers such as Habermas, Bohman, Mansbridge and Cohen. Through this framework it argues that the major obstacles to democracy in Mexico, such as social and economic inequalities, patronage and a weak rule of law, constitute also obstacles to this deliberative development of the Mexican media.
