Abstract

Composite materials are used in all kinds of engineering structures, medical prosthetic devices, sensors and electromagnetic interference shields and so on. The γ-Fe2O3/polyaniline-Mesna (γ-Fe2O3/PANI-Mesna) composite with conducting and superparamagnetic characters is synthesised in an aqueous hydrochloric acid solution (0·2 mol L−1) containing aniline, 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium ethyl sulphate (EMIES) and γ-iron sesquioxide (γ-Fe2O3) by using mesna as a dopant and ammonium persulfate [(NH4)2S2O8] as an oxidant. Fourier transform infrared spectra (FTIR), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and transmission electron microscope (TEM) have been used to characterise the γ-Fe2O3/PANI-Mesna composite and to confirm that mesna is doped into γ-Fe2O3/PANI chains. The cyclic voltammetry (CV) and magnetisation studies show that γ-Fe2O3/PANI-Mesna composite has the superparamagnetism (14 emu g−1) and electrochemical activity at pH 4-8. The study provides an academic foundation for developing some new material for immobilising drugs of anticancer. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
