Abstract

In this article the author discusses the restart of Japan's nuclear power plants, which were taken out of service following the 2011 magnitude-9.1 Sendai earthquake and tsunami that led to a nuclear accident at the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant. He argues that there is no way to ensure absolute safety of nuclear power plants and discusses the variety of natural hazards that pose risks to reactors throughout Japan and the political aspects of nuclear energy in Japan.
