Abstract: Penetration of bacteria by endocytosis into gill epithelial cells has been revealed in animals of different evolutionary levels (freshwater mollusks and fishes). These data confirm the leading role of endosymbiosis in the origin of eukaryotes from prokaryotes and in the evolution of animal life.
