Abstract

This study focused on how the local structures in pure [N(CH <subscript>3</subscript> ) <subscript>4</subscript> ] <subscript>2</subscript> ZnBr <subscript>4</subscript> crystal are affected by the partial replacement of Zn <superscript>2+</superscript> ions with Cu <superscript>2+</superscript> ions. The structures and phase transition temperatures T <subscript>C</subscript> of perovskite-type [N(CH <subscript>3</subscript> ) <subscript>4</subscript> ] <subscript>2</subscript> Zn <subscript>1-x</subscript> Cu <subscript>x</subscript> Br <subscript>4</subscript> (x = 0, 0.5, 0.7, and 1) mixed crystals were almost unchanged by the partial doping of Cu <superscript>2+</superscript> ions. The environments for the local structures of [N(CH <subscript>3</subscript> ) <subscript>4</subscript> ] <subscript>2</subscript> Zn <subscript>1-x</subscript> Cu <subscript>x</subscript> Br <subscript>4</subscript> mixed systems were studied according to differences in the chemical shifts of the <superscript>1</superscript> H magic angle spinning (MAS) NMR, <superscript>13</superscript> C cross-polarization (CP)/MAS NMR, and <superscript>14</superscript> N NMR spectra. The <superscript>1</superscript> H and <superscript>13</superscript> C NMR results showed that the local environments of <superscript>1</superscript> H and <superscript>13</superscript> C nuclei near T <subscript>C</subscript> are not affected by substituting Zn <superscript>2+</superscript> ions with Cu <superscript>2+</superscript> ions, whereas the <superscript>14</superscript> N NMR results showed that the local environment is affected near T <subscript>C</subscript> . Consequently, the main indicators of the phase transition in [N(CH <subscript>3</subscript> ) <subscript>4</subscript> ] <subscript>2</subscript> Zn <subscript>1-x</subscript> Cu <subscript>x</subscript> Br <subscript>4</subscript> are related to the ferroelastic characteristics with different orientations.
