Homo- and Heteroligand Poly-NHC Metal Assemblies: Synthesis by Narcissistic and Social Self-Sorting.

Abstract

Homoleptic and heteroleptic cylinder-shaped poly-NHC metallosupramolecular assemblies [Ag <subscript>3</subscript> (L) <subscript>2</subscript> ](BF <subscript>4</subscript> ) <subscript>3</subscript> have been prepared by control of the shape, size, and electronic properties of disk-shaped trisimidazolium salts of type H <subscript>3</subscript> -L(BF <subscript>4</subscript> ) <subscript>3</subscript> . Both imidazolium salts with an electron-deficient triazine backbone H <subscript>3</subscript> -A(BF <subscript>4</subscript> ) <subscript>3</subscript> or an electron-rich benzene backbone H <subscript>3</subscript> -D(BF <subscript>4</subscript> ) <subscript>3</subscript> have been employed. Reaction of H <subscript>3</subscript> -A(BF <subscript>4</subscript> ) <subscript>3</subscript> or H <subscript>3</subscript> -D(BF <subscript>4</subscript> ) <subscript>3</subscript> with Ag <subscript>2</subscript> O yield trinuclear homoligand complexes [Ag <subscript>3</subscript> (L) <subscript>2</subscript> ](BF <subscript>4</subscript> ) <subscript>3</subscript> (L=A, D). However, equimolar mixtures of H <subscript>3</subscript> -A(BF <subscript>4</subscript> ) <subscript>3</subscript> and H <subscript>3</subscript> -D(BF <subscript>4</subscript> ) <subscript>3</subscript> react with Ag <subscript>2</subscript> O under social self-sorting to give the heteroligand assembly [Ag <subscript>3</subscript> (A)(D)](BF <subscript>4</subscript> ) <subscript>3</subscript> . The same heteroligand assembly was obtained by transmetallation from mixtures of complexes [Ag <subscript>3</subscript> (A) <subscript>2</subscript> ](BF <subscript>4</subscript> ) <subscript>3</subscript> and [Ag <subscript>3</subscript> (D) <subscript>2</subscript> ](BF <subscript>4</subscript> ) <subscript>3</subscript> . The transmetallation from [Ag <subscript>3</subscript> (A)(D)](BF <subscript>4</subscript> ) <subscript>3</subscript> to [Au <subscript>3</subscript> (A)(D)](BF <subscript>4</subscript> ) <subscript>3</subscript> is also demonstrated. The study expands to concepts of narcissistic and social self-sorting from classical Werner-type ligands to organometallic NHC chemistry thereby opening new routes for the construction of poly-NHC metal assemblies with increasing complexity.<br /> (© 2018 Wiley-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co.
