Abstract

A PP(O)P pincer ligand based upon a peri -substituted acenaphthyl (Ace) scaffold and a secondary phosphine oxide, (5-Ph <subscript>2</subscript> P-Ace-6-) <subscript>2</subscript> P(O)H, was prepared and fully characterized including a neutron diffraction study. The reaction with [Ni(H <subscript>2</subscript> O) <subscript>6</subscript> ]Cl <subscript>2</subscript> and PdCl <subscript>2</subscript> produced ionic metal(II) complexes [κ <superscript>3</superscript> - P , P' , P'' ((5-Ph <subscript>2</subscript> P-Ace-6-) <subscript>2</subscript> P(OH))MCl]Cl, which upon addition of Et <subscript>3</subscript> N gave rise to zwitterionic metal(II) complexes κ <superscript>3</superscript> - P , P' , P'' ((5-Ph <subscript>2</subscript> P-Ace-6-) <subscript>2</subscript> P(O))MCl (M = Ni, Pd). The reaction with Ni(COD) <subscript>2</subscript> (COD = cyclooctadiene) provided the η <superscript>3</superscript> -cyclooctenyl Ni(II) complex κ <superscript>3</superscript> - P , P' , P'' ((5-Ph <subscript>2</subscript> P-Ace-6-) <subscript>2</subscript> P(O))Ni(η <superscript>3</superscript> -C <subscript>8</subscript> H <subscript>13</subscript> ). A detailed complementary bonding analysis of the P-H, P-O, and P-M interactions was carried out (M = Ni, Pd).
