Abstract: The role of a basic scientist working with paediatric surgeons is not an obvious one. However, there are several levels at which science can contribute to the speciality, and also ways that scientists can learn useful lessons from paediatric surgery. As most conditions treated by paediatric surgeons have low case numbers, we need to find ways of defining optimal treatment and developing novel therapies within a challenging number of patients.<br /> (Copyright © 2023 The Author.
