Abstract

Reactions of N,N '- bis (3-methylpyridyl)oxalamide ( L <superscript>1</superscript> ), N , N '- bis (3-methylpyridyl)adipoamide ( L <superscript>2</superscript> ) and N , N '- bis (3-methylpyridyl)sebacoamide ( L <superscript>3</superscript> ) with tricarboxylic acids and Cu(II) salts afforded {[Cu( L <superscript>1</superscript> )(1,3,5-HBTC)]·H <subscript>2</subscript> O} <subscript>n</subscript> (1,3,5-H <subscript>3</subscript> BTC = 1,3,5-benzenetricarboxylic acid), 1 , {[Cu <subscript>1.5</subscript> ( L <superscript>2</superscript> ) <subscript>1.5</subscript> (1,3,5-BTC)(H <subscript>2</subscript> O) <subscript>2</subscript> ]·6.5H <subscript>2</subscript> O} <subscript>n</subscript> , 2 , [Cu( L <superscript>2</superscript> ) <subscript>0.5</subscript> (1,3,5-HBTB)] <subscript>n</subscript> (1,3,5-H <subscript>3</subscript> BTB = 1,3,5-tri(4-carboxyphenyl)benzene), 3 , [Cu <subscript>4</subscript> ( L <superscript>3</superscript> )(OH) <subscript>2</subscript> (1,3,5-BTC) <subscript>2</subscript> ] <subscript>n</subscript> , 4 , {[Cu <subscript>3</subscript> ( L <superscript>3</superscript> ) <subscript>2</subscript> (1,3,5-BTB) <subscript>2</subscript> ]·2.5MeOH·2H <subscript>2</subscript> O} <subscript>n</subscript> , 5 , and {[Cu <subscript>3</subscript> ( L <superscript>3</superscript> ) <subscript>2</subscript> (1,3,5-BTB) <subscript>2</subscript> ]·DMF·2H <subscript>2</subscript> O} <subscript>n</subscript> , 6 , which have been structurally characterized by using single crystal X-ray crystallography. Complexes 1-4 form a 2D layer with the {4 <superscript>4</superscript> .6 <superscript>2</superscript> }- sql topology, a 2D layer with the (4.6 <superscript>2</superscript> ) <subscript>2</subscript> (4 <superscript>2</superscript> .6 <superscript>2</superscript> .8 <superscript>2</superscript> )- bex topology, a three-fold interpenetrated 3D net with the (4 <superscript>12</superscript> ·6 <superscript>3</superscript> )- pcu topology and a 3D framework with the (4 <superscript>10</superscript> ·6 <superscript>32</superscript> ·8 <superscript>3</superscript> )(4 <superscript>2</superscript> ·6) <subscript>2</subscript> (4 <superscript>3</superscript> ·6 <superscript>3</superscript> ) topology, respectively, whereas 5 and 6 are 3D frameworks with the (6 <superscript>3</superscript> ) <subscript>2</subscript> (6 <superscript>4</superscript> ·8 <superscript>2</superscript> )(6 <superscript>8</superscript> ·8 <superscript>5</superscript> ·10 <superscript>2</superscript> ) topology. Complex 5 shows a better iodine adsorption factor of 290.0 mg g <superscript>-1</superscript> at 60 °C for 360 min than the other ones, revealing that the flexibility of the spacer ligand governs the structural diversity and the adsorption capacity.
