Abstract

Reaction of CuCl <subscript>2</subscript> ·2H <subscript>2</subscript> O with p-tert -butylthiacalix[4]arene (H <subscript>4</subscript> TC[4]A) affords a [CuII24] cage whose metallic skeleton conforms to a truncated octahedron in which the metal ions are strongly antiferromagnetically coupled. A structurally related [CuII8] cluster can be made using CuBr <subscript>2</subscript> in an otherwise identical reaction.
