Solvent-induced structural diversities from discrete cup-shaped Co8 clusters to Co8 cluster-based chains accompanied by in situ ligand conversion.

Solvent induced structural diversities from a cup-shaped Co₈ cluster (1) in methanol to a Co₈ cluster-based co-crystal chain (2) in ethanol/n-propanol and a Co₈ cluster-based chain (3) in n-butanol under the same stoichiometric ratio of reactants have been reported. In situ ligand conversion has taken place and the new ligand is captured within the metallic core. Magnetic analyses indicate that theses complexes exhibit distinct magnetic behaviours at low temperature. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
