Abstract

Substation automation technology is currently undergoing a major change, comparable to that of the introduction of Remote Terminal Unit (RTU) technology 30 years ago, and Distributed Control System (DCS) technology 15 years ago. Standardization is the key factor in today's industry. The overall standardization process is aimed at optimizing the life-cycle cost of secondary equipment and services. Development in standards for substations is taking place in response to the experiences reported by numerous utilities in the world.
