Investigation into Formation of Metallic Beads on Wheel Ingots.

This paper discusses the results of investigation into the formation of metallic beads on the bottom-poured ingots manufactured in Durgapur Steel Plant. These beads were very hard and offered extreme resistance to the sawing operation. Frequently, the saw blades broke on encountering these beads. A metallographic investigation revealed formation of hard white iron material due to the interactions of the mould powder and the liquid steel in the feeder head.
