Abstract

This article presents the 1972 report of the membership committee of the American Sociological Association (ASA). As of May 1972, there are 14,934 members of the ASA, an increase of 349 over 1971. The following tables reflect various aspects of the membership growth during the past six years. The most noteworthy of these changes was that the Member category showed the largest increase, larger than any previous year, while all other membership categories showed a decrease. The recent changes in the classification of members has required that collapse of all categories Fellow and Active members into the present member category in order that the past membership figures will be comparable. The membership class of Foreign Associate was changed to International Associates, and certain students who became eligible for the Member classification remained in the student class if they continued as students but have rights of the Member class. The growth of the Association has certainly not been up to expectations. It has become increasingly apparent that an effective membership campaign must be at the grassroots level, i.e., regional and local contact with non-members, particularly to make membership information available to students.
