Abstract

This article focuses on the purchase of Compaq Computer Corp. by Hewlett-Packard Co.(HP). Carleton S. Fiorina, the chief executive of Hewlett-Packard, has cut $3.5 billion in annual costs. Despite erasing 17,000 jobs since the merger, HP has gained market share in key categories, scored 3,000 new patents and debuted 367 new products. HP has slashed billions in costs by overhauling its data processing operations and its supply chain. In merging its systems with Compaq's, HP erected a single communications network linking more than a quarter of a million computers.
