Abstract

The section introduces a series of articles highlighted at the Challenge of Business Ethics conference in Cambridge, England. The diversity of the papers disguised a unity of contradiction, which linked papers that addressed the same key themes and tensions from opposite perspectives. The corporate social responsibility (CSR) approach faces the problem of converting formal, generalized, intentions into practical and consistent action. The paper by Ioanna Foka in this special edition picks up on this theme and provides a framework for benchmarking organizations' performance on CSR. Other contributors, implicitly or explicitly, consider the sublation of this tension between a focus on the organization and a focus on the individual.
