Abstract

The authors reflect on the polarity in categorical diagnosis of bipolar disorders with its lack of biologic underpinning and alleged overinclusiveness. They state the review on the changes of diagnostic and statistical manual (DSM) IV of mental disorders in any specific subgroup of individuals. Also examined is the testing of different proposals for refining or redefining diagnosis of bipolar disorders such as Barcelona proposal and Harvard index.
