Abstract

This paper is devoted to the experimental study of chemical degradation effects on the mechanical behavior of sandstone. The sandstone samples were immersed in acid solutions with different pH values to undergo chemical degradation. Conventional triaxial compression tests with different confining pressures were performed on chemically degraded samples. It is found that the chemical degradation induced the diminution of elastic modulus and compression failure strength. Triaxial compression creep tests were then carried out with different stress levels. The experimental data showed that the creep deformation rate is enhanced by the chemical degradation.
