Abstract

The article presents the reply of sociologist Andy Pickering on the question raised by social scientist Diana Crane on his use of the concept of analogy. Diana Crane questions Pickering's use of the concept of analogy and raises specific points of interpretation of historical development in theoretical high energy physics (THEP). Pickering feels that Crane was somewhat miscounted by the concept of analogy and he tries to clarify the doubt in order to clarify the difference in their approaches. Use of the term "analogy," by Pickering refer to the modelling of work in one research tradition on that established on another. The development of THEP is marked out into identifiable traditions, each based upon an exemplary achievement. Crane has provided a list of the major traditions originating in the THEP from 1960 to 1975, but Pickering feels that the process of development of such a tradition is one of increasing sophistication and refinement of the original exemplar. Pickering published a paper to indicate how reconceptualization can be achieved.
