Abstract

Schizothorax plagiostomus, a fresh water fish, is an economically important fish of Pakistan. In this study, the complete mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) sequence ofS. plagiostomuswas explored. The mitogenome length was found to be 16 563bp with 13 protein-coding genes, 22 tRNA genes, 2 rRNA genes and 2 non-coding regions: origin of light-strand replication (OL) and control region (D-loop). All genes were encoded on the heavy strand exceptND6and few tRNA genes. The overall base composition ofS. plagiostomusof the heavy strand was T 25.5%, C 27.0%, A 29.8% and G 17.8%, A + T content 55.3% and G + C content 44.7%. The phylogenetic tree suggests thatS. esocinus, S. progastus, S. richardsoniiandS. plagiostomusmay have closer affinities than other fish of the genusSchizothorax. This mitogenome sequence would be useful for phylogenetic analysis and conservation of this species in Pakistan. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
