Abstract

The article discusses the role of newspapers, party politics and statemen in Alabama in the dispute between the U.S. federal and state governments in the territory that was ceded by the Creek Indians in the 1832 Treaty of Cusseta. Particular focus is given on lawyer Francis Scott Key's 1833 visit to Alabama under the command of President Andrew Jackson to end the dispute which was caused by the death of Hardeman Owens, who was accused of cheating the Indians out of their lands.
