Abstract

We used three exam and homework assessment methods in teaching a business statistics course in a variety of settings -- large and small classes and day and evening sessions. The aim of our study was to determine which of these assessment methods was most efficacious with respect to student learning. The proxy for "learning" was an outcome measure based on overall course performance consisting of grades on three exams and nine homework assignments. The results of an ANCOVA indicate that there was significantly less learning in a large class environment using courseware assisted examinations and homework assignments when compared to small class sections employing traditional "paper and pencil" assessment or a combination of courseware assisted and traditional (i.e., mixed) assessment.
