Abstract

The article discusses the use of magnetic fields for animals and bacteria. Topics covered include the magnetosensory skills of some animals, the use of magnetotaxis by bacteria, the way by which magnetotactic bacteria are able to biomineralise iron to make tiny magnetite crystals in compartments called magnetosomes and the use of magnetic cues by nematodes to direct movement in the vertical axis as they burrow through the soil.
