Abstract

Young people who do not affirm themselves have been currently increasing. When they are faced with their problem, they are terribly upset and withdraw from society. This study examined the self-affirmation of university students, and identified the factors which have a significant and influential connection to their self-affirmation. For the purposes of this research, we proposed to refer to these factors using the following terminology: "school life", "the paternal relationship", "the maternal relationship", "the parents marital relationship", and "gender distinction". The sample consisted of 539 students, from freshmen to seniors, 285 males and 254 females. The results of the survey were as follows. On the whole, the self-affirmation of university students was not low. Male students had a higher self-affirmation than female students did. Multiple regression analysis results indicated that popularity in school life and a close relationship to same-sex parents had great influences on the self-affirmation of university students. Comparatively, popularity in school life had more influence on student self-affirmation than a close relationship to same-sex parents did. Regarding the parental relationship, a close relationship to the same-sex parents had a direct and measurable influence on the self-affirmation of university students. Contrastingly, rejection by samesex parents had a negative influence on students' self-affirmation. In addition, rejection by opposite-sex parents resulted in closer relationships to same-sex parents, and had a positive influence on students' self-affirmation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
