Abstract

Many contributions to the history of the automobile focus on production. Instead, this paper explores various kinds of services that support automobile drivers to use their vehicles. The service network consists of automobile dealers, the automobile workshops, fueling stations, tire dealers and garage stations as well as service centers. The mass production of automobiles was supplemented by mass distribution. Automobile producers had to establish a special structure of automobile dealers. The paper explores the conflicts between producers and dealers. The service network in Germany of the 1920s consisted of a new field of small scale entrepreneurs that laid the ground for the expanding service economy. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
