Abstract

The article explores the evolution of mitochondria. It describes how mitochondria evolved beginning with an engulfment of a small bacterium by a larger archaeon more than a billion years ago. It also discusses the roles of mitochondria in the body and the importance of the quality control of the organelles in relation to evolution, disease and aging.
