Abstract

A series of alkali earth cadmium selenites including MgCd<subscript>3</subscript>(SeO<subscript>3</subscript>)<subscript>4</subscript> (1), Ca<subscript>0.7</subscript>Cd<subscript>2.3</subscript>(SeO<subscript>3</subscript>)<subscript>3</subscript> (2), SrCd(SeO<subscript>3</subscript>)<subscript>2</subscript> (3) and BaCd(SeO<subscript>3</subscript>)<subscript>2</subscript> (4) are synthesized by hydrothermal reaction and studied in detail by single crystal and powdered X-ray diffractions, thermal analyses, IR and UV spectral measurements and dipole moment calculation. 1 features a 3D anionic [Cd<subscript>3</subscript>(SeO<subscript>3</subscript>)<subscript>4</subscript>]<superscript>2−</superscript> framework constructed from isolated SeO<subscript>3</subscript> trigonal pyramids and 2D [Cd<subscript>3</subscript>O<subscript>12</subscript>]<subscript>n</subscript> layers, in which the [Cd<subscript>3</subscript>O<subscript>12</subscript>]<subscript>n</subscript> layer is composed of edge-shared [Cd<subscript>2</subscript>O<subscript>10</subscript>]<superscript>16−</superscript> dimers and butterfly-like [Cd<subscript>4</subscript>O<subscript>20</subscript>]<superscript>32−</superscript> tetramers. 2 shows a smooth 2D [Cd<subscript>2</subscript>(SeO<subscript>3</subscript>)<subscript>3</subscript>]<subscript>n</subscript> layer composed of unique [Cd(SeO<subscript>3</subscript>)]<subscript>n</subscript> double chains. 3 exhibits a wavelike 2D [Cd(SeO<subscript>3</subscript>)<subscript>2</subscript>]<subscript>n</subscript> layer constructed from corner-shared CdO<subscript>6</subscript> octahedra and isolated SeO<subscript>3</subscript> trigonal pyramids. 4 displays a windmill-like 1D [Cd(SeO<subscript>3</subscript>)<subscript>2</subscript>]<subscript>n</subscript> chain built from zigzag [CdO<subscript>4</subscript>]<subscript>n</subscript> chain motifs and isolated SeO<subscript>3</subscript> trigonal pyramids. The alkali earth oxide motifs demonstrate interesting and regular changes from isolated MgO<subscript>6</subscript> octahedra, CaO<subscript>7</subscript> polyhedra, and SrO<subscript>9</subscript> tri-capped trigonal prisms based on a ribbon chain to BaO<subscript>12</subscript> icosahedra based on a brucite-like layer, and meanwhile the SeO<subscript>3</subscript> groups are observed from variable tetradentate to hexadentate coordination modes. These flexible motifs reveal that cadmium selenites are strongly affected by the size of the alkali earth cations, providing a feasible approach to modulating their space structure via selection of template cation.
