Abstract

Objective: We evaluated the effect of young barley grass extract powder on body weight increase and visceral fat accumulation in mice fed a high-fat diet. Methods: Young barley grass extract powder was manufactured by freeze drying the compressed juice. Mice (6 weeks of age) were fed a high-fat diet or a high-fat diet that included 1% barley grass extract powder for 8 weeks. Body weights were monitored for 8 weeks and visceral fat accumulation was measured after 8 weeks. Results: Young barley grass extract powder significantly reduced body weight increases and visceral fat accumulation in mice fed a high-fat diet. Conclusion: Long-term consumption of young barley grass extract powder may be effective for the prevention of metabolic syndromes such as obesity, atherosclerosis, and diabetes.
