Regular automated red cell exchange transfusion in the management of stuttering priapism complicating sickle cell disease.

The article discusses research which examined the effect of regulated automated red cell exchange transfusion (ARCET) in male patients with sickle cell disease (SCD) and recurrent stuttering priapism (SP), an unwanted erection. Topics discussed include management measures for SP, evolution of SP into acute major priapism (MP) which carries a risk of erectile dysfunction (ED), patient characteristics and haematological parameters and improvement experienced by patients after undergoing ARCET.
