Abstract

This article presents a report of the Committee on the Visiting Scientists Program for Sociology. The Visiting Scientists Program for the American Sociological Association began rather slowly in 1962-63 as the Committee attempted to select institutions to be visited and visiting scientists. As of May 15, 1963, there were 13 visits completed. Approximately 18 more visits will be completed by the beginning of June, 1963, if all goes well. Both the sociologists selected as visiting scientists and the institutions to be visited have proven to be most cooperative. The Committee has received a large number of inquiries concerning the program, and the program appears to be fulfilling a long-standing need. It is still too early to tell how successful the program has been in fulfilling its objectives, but an evaluation report will be prepared this summer by scholar John Kitsuse of Northwestern University. The report will examine the procedures of the program and the reactions to the program both by visiting scientists and institutions visited. In
