Abstract

This paper discusses the role of the periodical press in Yakutia which issued in Sakha language in 1990-s. The historical magazine Ilin (the East) about culture and spirituality which published since 1991 in Yakutsk (Republic of Sakha (Yakutia)) expressed ideas of national renovation and national self-identity. The explanation of the phenomena of periodical press of indigenous people of Yakutia - Sakha, is based on the comparative historical research: archival data, secondary sources. The press in the post-Soviet period, and the Ilin Magazine in particular, played a significant role in creating native cultural and spiritual values of the modern Yakutia society; and took an active part in the process of cultural, historical education. Publication of materials reflecting the main principles of national and cultural development of each national group and the society of the peoples living in Russia in the modern conditions. The press, being a social arena, contributed greatly to the expansion of cultural values and the formation of moral ideals. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
