Abstract
- The pentalene-ligated dysprosium complex [(η<superscript>8</superscript>-Pn<superscript>†</superscript>)Dy(Cp*)] (1<subscript>Dy</subscript>) (Pn<superscript>†</superscript> = [1,4-(<superscript>i</superscript>Pr<subscript>3</subscript>Si)<subscript>2</subscript>C<subscript>8</subscript>H<subscript>4</subscript>]<superscript>2−</superscript>) and its magnetically dilute analogue are single-molecule magnets, with energy barriers of 245 cm<superscript>−1</superscript>. Whilst the [Cp*]<superscript>−</superscript> ligand in 1<subscript>Dy</subscript> provides a strong axial crystal field, the overall axiality of this system is attenuated by the unusual folded structure of the [Pn<superscript>†</superscript>]<superscript>2−</superscript> ligand.
