Abstract

The article comments on West-East Pipeline Project (WEPP) in China. The WEPP is a complex project costing some $8.5 billion that will bring gas from northwestern China to the fast-developing cities in the east. The WEPP is, perhaps, a good example of a major step toward reducing the impact of increased energy use in China. The project will bring environmental benefits to China by replacing the use of coal in many eastern cities. It will deliver an estimated 20% of China's projected natural gas demand by 2010. This will reduce annual carbon dioxide emissions by 8 million tons and sulphur dioxide emissions by 400,000 tons.
