Focuses on the function of comprehensive secondary schools in Great Britain in the 1980s. Need to distinguish the activity of reflecting about education from the more specific form of reflecting called theorizing; Examination of Denis Lawton's theory that the curriculum should be based on a selection from the culture; Inclusion of the egalitarian theory, in which mixed ability teaching is an article of faith, in the comprehensive ideal.
