Abstract

The article presents information on the New York Film Festival in the U.S. The German entry at the film festival is translated as "Artists Under the Big Top: Perplexed." At least four of the films featured during the Lincoln Center fortnight were about disorientation, disaffection, dissolution. They each echo or reflect what people hear, see or feel all around them. In this sense, despite their emphatic stylization, the films are basically "realistic." Civilization is coming apart at the seams. While the central emotion in these films is recognizable enough, it is symptomatic that they should all be composed as abstractions. Symptomatic and saddening.
