Abstract

The article discusses welfare rights activism on behalf of African American women in New Orleans between 1959 and 1962, particularly concerning legislation known as the suitable home laws, which provided money from the U.S. Social Security Act's welfare provision Aid to Dependent Children (ADC), and active denial by the Louisiana Board of Social Welfare of ADC funding to African American women and children.
