Abstract
- The article presents information on letters addressed to Californian governor Edmund G. Brown regarding Caryl Chessman, who has been awarded capital punishment in the U.S. should be sent to the gas chamber. It also discusses public sympathy for capital punishment. Some letters that have reached the governor's office defend the man while others urge his death. Unfortunately, the letters defending Chessman do not argue his case but the case against capital punishment. It may be difficult to separate the two, yet that's what the governor must do. He must work with the law as it now stands-a law he opposes perhaps as much as his petitioners.
