Abstract

Methylation of the molybdenum sulfide cluster unit [Mo<subscript>6</subscript>S<subscript>8</subscript>(PEt<subscript>3</subscript>)<subscript>6</subscript>] (1) with CH<subscript>3</subscript>OTf resulted in the formation of mono‐ and dimethylated cluster units, [Mo<subscript>6</subscript>S<subscript>8–x</subscript>(SCH<subscript>3</subscript>)<subscript>x</subscript>(PEt<subscript>3</subscript>)<subscript>6</subscript>]OTf·yCH<subscript>2</subscript>Cl<subscript>2</subscript> {[2]OTf·0.5CH<subscript>2</subscript>Cl<subscript>2</subscript> (x = 1, y = 0.5) and [3]OTf·CH<subscript>2</subscript>Cl<subscript>2</subscript> (x = 2, y = 1)}. Structural and electrochemical investigations revealed that the methylation of the µ<subscript>3</subscript>‐S ligand(s) induced a characteristic structural distortion of the [Mo<subscript>6</subscript>S<subscript>8</subscript>] cluster core and enhanced its ability to accept multiple electrons.
