Abstract

By any reckoning, American politics is presently in a shambles, confused, absurd, and irrelevant. The old labels have become meaningless; the old signposts have vanished; yet the political dialogue continues as though nothing has happened. The power to control implies the power to poison, to wreck, even to destroy. If this power is to be subject to democratic control, if it is to be used wisely, if it is to be directed to ends of worldwide meaning and acceptance, then one must have a new politics based on the new realities of the scientific revolution. If, insisted of being more or less at his mercy of the environment, man is now to assume control of his total environment, with implications of biological control as well, he will need a new politics to match his new responsibilities.
