Abstract
- Harmonic loads and unbalanced loading in a distribution transformer lead to higher losses, an increase in temperature that leads to premature failure, and a shorter lifetime. To prevent these difficulties, the rated power of a transformer supplying nonlinear loads or unbalanced load is reduced; commonly known as derating. In this paper, an alternative to traditional loss based derating is proposed. It is shown that derating might actually not be required when contrasted with the traditional approach. A perspective is presented on how to make the kVA rating “adaptive” and utilize the same kVA rating with or without harmonics. Actual field data are presented to support this viewpoint.
