Abstract

This article focuses on social conditions in France during 1946. People of France are celebrating the first anniversary of the end of a five-year nightmare of defeat, treason, occupation and tough costly resistance. Nowhere do the people seem apathetic. More than a million workers marched, in party or trade-union formations, with floats and banners and hundreds of placards ringing variations on the over-all slogan "Work, Produce." French people use the black market, to the limited degree they can afford, in order to live a little more decently. When necessities are plentiful, they will thankfully revert to reasonable prices and legality.
