Abstract

Civic education is characterized by the fact that it is a continuous component of education, both formal and non-formal learning, including education of adults. This area of education is an important part of education, which is characterized, in particular, by dynamism. Significance and positive impact of citizenship education on the formation of active citizens is widely declared through a wide range of international documents (European Union, UNESCO, UN etc.). The influence of the state in this type of education is an important part of maintaining the continuity of civic education. The paper deals with the role of the state in citizenship education in the system of Slovak formal and non-formal learning and education policy in Slovakia. The paper is based mainly on legislative and strategic documents devoted to the education of children, youth and adults. In conclusion, the present contribution focuses on the role of the state in adult citizenship education, its institutional ensuring, and activities that are implemented and state-supported.
