Abstract

Recent conventions in Washington of the American Chemical Society and the American Association for the Advancement of Science-both of which gave considerable attention to basic food and population problems-cast some of the penetrating and objective lighting of science upon the confused political, economic, and Military issues which daily make the headlines in the newspapers. The American Association for the Advancement of Science was celebrating its centenary, and the presence of old Maithus, the population man, was strongly felt, somewhat as the shadow of Karl Marx falls across politics in this centennial year of the Communist Manifesto.
