Abstract

Art--including dramatic art--is not, as it is sometimes supposed to be, a trivial thing. It is just as important as any of the other means by which men express their criticism of life, and its freedom is just as essential for the healthy functioning of society as any other freedom. There is no argument for the freedom of thought and of the press which does not apply with equal force to dramatic. It is impossible to set any legal standard of decency, for the simple reason that decency is purely a matter of changing convention.
