Abstract

The article presents author's views on the French poet Victor Hugo. The author said that their group Parnassians have been accused of having tried to explode his reputation. But the author said that it is not true. They held him in the greatest respect. They even thought of him as the leader of their little group. That was when they were founding the Parnassian movement. The truth is that what the best poets, the greatest writers, bring back from their travels in the realm of fancy is as nothing beside the treasures accumulated by their predecessors. Victor Hugo is regarded as a wonderful innovator. He owed ninety-nine hundredths of his genius to others. However original he seems, his versification is traditional. It is the alexandrine.
